Don’t Miss Your Flight!

Matthew 24:44

So you must be ready because you know the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Planes are amazing, aren’t they? I mean, how does a super heavy piece of machinery glide through the air like a bird? It just seems so unnatural to me. I have never been a very good ‘flyer’, probably because of my control issues! But, my husband says it’s safer than driving….(insert eye roll).

If you fly often, you know how convenient flying can be. But you also know how difficult it can be to make alternate arrangements if you have a cancelled or missed flight. It’s not fun to be stranded in a city somewhere when you just want to get home!

Well, recently, my husband was about to fly home from a business trip. After sitting on the plane a good hour, they determined there was a maintenance issue and everyone was ordered off the plane. Ok…then, he books another flight to a different city but at least would get him home that day. After boarding that plane, before taxiing to the runway, a gentleman with vertigo ‘got sick’-(I’ll save you the details)- and after some time, they determined the plane could not fly, it needed to be cleaned. What a hassle it can be to miss your flight or have delays!

There’s an important flight I DO NOT want to miss! I don’t want any of my loved ones to miss it, either! That is when Christ comes back for us. We miss flights for different reasons-we’re late, traffic, getting through security…I know one thing, I don’t want to be too busy, too distracted, unprepared or anything that will prevent me making my flight to heaven. Matthew 24:40 says, Two men will be plowing a field, one will be taken, and the other will be left in the field. Be ready!

Here in the U.S., most of us are pretty comfortable. Oh we have issues, but nothing compared to some war torn or third world countries. I heard a story about an African pastor who was able to come preach in the U.S. for the first time. After a week here, he wanted to go home…his reason? He said he was already getting ‘too comfortable’, like he didn’t feel that he really ‘needed’ God. I mean, really needing and relying on Him…like for your daily water and food and safety…not for the new car or house we ‘need’.

Don’t get too comfortable. I’m talking to myself here, too. Matthew 24:42 says, So keep watch. You don’t know when your Lord will come.  The bible says Christ and the Angels don’t even know the day or time. It could be today, it might not be in our lifetime. But we are ordered to be ready! We have to stay on our toes. We don’t want to be left behind because of maintenance issues or delays or cancellations! Let’s check our boarding passes and make sure we are pre-checked so we don’t miss our flight home!

Dear God, You said with the sound of a trumpet, we will meet you in the air. Thank you for promising us a room in your kingdom. Help us to always look to the skies for You as we await your coming! Amen
