“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life…”
I have been a stay at home mom for 17 plus years. While I have loved every minute of it, it is not exactly challenging mentally. So when a part time work from home job came my way, I was interested, but scared to death! I was afraid that I couldn’t learn things again. I mean, I can multi-task at home like you wouldn’t believe. Like, when you bend over to pick something up and think…what else can I do while I am down here?! But, composing a spreadsheet…um, no.
I had a meeting with two women who would be my employers, and it went great. I was talking to my oldest son one day about how nervous I was and how I was starting to get cold feet. In his usual, very logical way, he said, “then put socks on”. So, I put on my socks, and went to the Word. I absolutely love the passage in Matthew about worry. I have read it a hundred times. Worry is a major weakness of mine. I love what Jesus says in Matthew 6:27, “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” That is pretty clear. As a matter of fact, a lot of studies show worry takes years off your life! I am getting better with fighting this battle, but have lots of work to do.
I decided to trust God. I prayed that if this was something he wanted me to do, he’d make it happen and it would be great. As time passed, I started to think it would be just fine if they didn’t choose me…it’s ok, I do not blame them for wanting someone who has worked in the recent past! I battled a lot of cold feet thoughts, and then I got the call and guess who they picked? Yup. I suddenly had total peace. This is part of His plan. And hey, if I can raise teens, I can make a spreadsheet!
Just like the old hymn says, I am learning to lean on Jesus. Learning to take one day at a time. It’s hard since I am a planner. I wake up say, ok let’s plan the day. My oldest regularly tells me ” Mom, we don’t have to plan all time”. I guess that’s true. And God has shown me many times, what I might think is the plan, is not His! And His is always way better!
If you are worried about money…God said, you are worth more than many sparrows. If you are worried about the election…don’t be, God said, do not worry about tomorrow…each day has enough trouble of its own. (But pray about it! And vote like a Christian!) Are you worried about your future? God said, for I know the plans I have for you…plans to prosper you..
So if you are worried, nervous or have cold feet, go get some nice, warm socks and curl up with the Word. Let God warm your feet and your soul with his love and reassurance. He’s got this!
Dear God, Forgive us for forgetting that you hold the whole world in your hands. There is nothing too difficult for you. We don’t have to worry about anything. Thank you for caring so much for us, that you remind us in your word- don’t worry! Amen
