Right Hand Man

Isaiah 41:13

For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.

I have a very large picture of The Creation by Michelangelo in my dining room.  I just love it.  Recently, several scriptures I’ve read mentioned God’s right hand or right side.  In Michelangelo’s painting, it’s God’s right hand that creates Adam.  I was suddenly curious….what’s with the ‘right’ hand?

We’ve all heard the saying “he’s my right hand man (or woman!)” And a vast majority of people are right handed.  Don’t worry lefties, you are special in your own way!  Some people say the saying originated from the Bible. The fact that God mentions his right hand or right side over 160 times in His word, signals some significance.

I came across a drawing of Jesus hanging onto a person with His right hand while the man dangled over a cliff.  The caption read, “I will never let you go”.  Did you ever feel like that? Like you are dangling over a cliff, terrified. Terrified of falling.   Terrified of letting go.  He won’t let go. Period. That picture was so touching to me.  In Psalms 89:13 it says, You have a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your right hand is exalted.  You can literally trust that He will not let you go.  Ever.

His word also talks a lot about God’s right side.  Luke 22:69 says, But from now on, the Son of God will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.  Jesus is seated at God’s right side.  He is quite literally God’s right hand man!

I think God’s right hand and side symbolize many things. His strength, His faithfulness, His mighty power, just to name a few.   For me, it also symbolizes his trustworthiness.  When I dwell on the fact that I can literally trust my God, no matter what I face, it is such a relief, I can loosen my grip and rest in His hands.

We can represent God’s faithfulness and love to others.  We can be the right hand man/woman to those around us.  Showing God’s love, mercy and grace.  As you go throughout your day, don’t miss an opportunity.  Remember how our loving God lifts us up by our right hand,  let’s extend our hand of love and support as He does for us.

Dear God, Sometimes we are too busy to stop and lend a hand.  Help us to see the opportunities you give us to be a right hand man or woman to others. So others can see your love in us.  Amen
